Hi!!!
Thanks for the big update! I don't have much time to respond.  I'm really looking forward to Danny (cousin) getting here!! All my district is too! Half of them are going to Santa Maria so they can't wait to meet him. There is one sister I met who already left for Joao Pessoa a couple weeks ago, but only 5 other elders that I know of. Also, there was one Brazilian sister that I met who went. I'm really excited, one of the teachers who served there talked to me this week for like half an hour answering all my questions about the mission. Apparently there are the big cities, Natal and Joao Pessoa that are pretty wealthy and have a nice breeze, then countryside that is really hot, and a college town Campina Grande that he said was really fun! That would be cool to teach people my own age. I really love all of the Brazilian missionaries I meet. They are so loving and accepting! The sisters always give me hugs even if they don't know me. I swear all I have to do is smile at someone and it's like we're best friends. People are supposedly very friendly in Joao Pessoa and incredibly receptive to the gospel so that will be nice.
Some of the new Brazilian sisters want me to help teach them English and they'll help me with Portuguese every night memorizing the missionary purpose. It's great. My roommates are a riot, we're always laughing and teasing each other. It's fun because my portuguese is getting to the point where I can joke around with people sometimes. My new companion is a dream come true. We get along so well. We're always making friends with the Brazilians. Our joke is that we're celebrities because they all want pictures with the American sisters. It's really fun. REALLY fun.
I do like it here. Even when it's difficult, there is always something great to cheer me right back up. For instance, one of my very favorite Elder's is Elder Leite (means milk in Portuguese) from Capo Verde. He reminds me of my friend Elijah Rono at SUU and he has gotten his CTM stay extended the past 2 weeks because his visa still hasn't come. He is way bummed about it but I love it because he helps me practice my portuguese almost every day. He's such a sweet boy and he's serving in Mozambique with Dyllen Cafferty who lived upstairs from me last year at SUU!! Small world! Other small world thing: Elder Derek White who is in my district lived at the other end of my street last year at SUU. He never came to our ward though because he always went with his girlfriend, but he was roommates with Seth Stevens and some other guys in our ward. It was the weirdest thing ever when we made that connection. I probably walked past him a bunch of times going to and from school.
At night there are dogs barking like the whole night long. I can sleep through it pretty well usually, but it's so strange. There are a lot of weird whistling noises too, our Brazilera roommates don't even think twice about it, but the American sisters are weirded out. Speaking of which, we are down to 7 American sisters. No wonder they treat us like celebrities. Haha. I passed my halfway mark last Saturday!! It's all downhill from here. Time goes faster and faster each week, I'm really getting excited to go to the field. When I was studying one day last week outside I got a big tan line on my arm. I'm going to sizzle in Joao Pessoa, the Brasileros tell me I'm going to die there like everyday. It's fine though, I like the heat. And I have sunscreen.
Have you received pictures of me at the temples... the question mark key doesn't work on this keyboard, way lame. Anyways they said they would send them to you so hopefully you got them. I sent some more pictures in the mail today. It should take about 2 weeks for you to receive them. I get letters from you in about one week though which is nice.
Today we went to the churrascaria, or however you spell it. It's basically like the original Rodizio Grill. I feel like I have a baby cow in my stomach now I ate so much meat. AND I asked the waiter guy if I could take a picture of the BBQ thing... IN PORTUGUESE. Yeah and he understood me and said that I speak like a Brasilera!! Best moment ever!! Our teachers came with us too so that was really fun!
LOVE YOU ALL!!!
Laurel
