What a great week here in Pombal.
We have been super
super super blessed the past couple weeks. We've reached our goals for
the 3rd week in the row (longest streak of my mission so far) and we had
a baptism yesterday.
A boy named Tiago who is only 10, but super mature for his age. He
knows tons of stuff about the church already because he has been going
with his cousin for about 2 years off and on since she got baptized. It
is amazing how much kids learn in Primary. He knows more than some of
the adults there I think.
I am LOVING my new companion Sister Alves.
Seriously. We have so much fun together. I sent a couple pictures to try
and illustrate our life here. All the children LOVE us. We basically
get showered with love by the youth here and it is wonderful.
There are a
bunch of really cool young men who are preparing for missions and go
teach with us. They always joke with me and try to get me to learn
Portuguese raps. So far I have memorized the first few lines of one
called Negro Drama. We also found out last night that one of the little
boys that always hangs out at Ronaldo's fruiteria with us knows how to
rap the whole song and break dance at the same time. I made a video of
it last night, we were seriously dying laughing. Oh man, kids seriously
bring so much happiness to our lives here in Pombal. I just feel way sad
because a lot of them are going to have rough futures. I know they
won't stay innocent for ever and this city has a lot of wickedness. We
started teaching a boy this week that just got out of rehab in João
Pessoa and he is only 17 years old. He started using drugs when he was
only 8. Yeah, lots of temptation and wickedness here in Pombal. Also,
there are good people too. We started teaching a man named Francisco
this week who was sent to us by God. It was one of those chance contacts
on the street and he said that he had a feeling to walk a different
route that day and that he had stopped drinking the week before and was
ready to change his life. He went to church yesterday
and loved it. We scheduled his baptism for later this month. Also, our
recent convert Ronaldo went to teach him with us last night and they
related a lot to each other. It will be good for them to help each other
persevere in the gospel.
Sister Alves also taught me how to Samba this week. I
still need lots of practice, but I am starting to get the basic rhythm.
She is so much fun to serve with. She's got culture, you know? Lots of
laughing with her as my comp. Also, we made brigadeiro truffles this week. Super delicious.
Funny moments this week too. One when we taught a
lesson to a lady and she was responding with super weird answers and it
wasn't until the next day when we talked to her neighbor that we found
out she is hard of hearing and probably just was embarrassed to tell us.
We thought she was just mentally a little off, but no she just couldn't
hear what we were saying probably. Another day we contacted a guy on
the street and told him we wanted to invite him to church with us. After
we finished explaining where the church was and when and that we are
missionaries he looked at us and said "so where is the invitation?" As
if he was waiting for a paper invite like you would give to a birthday
party. Sister Alves just laughed and pulled a pamphlet out of her bag to
give to him. Such a great moment.
This week we are going to Sousa 2 times. Once for
zone meeting and the other for a conference with the zones in Caicó and
Mossoró and us. I am super excited to see the missionaries who are still
in my old zone and all the other sisters in the zones. It is going to
be great. I
have been super blessed with good health. I had to translate for the mission doctor
in São Paulo yesterday
on the phone because he only speaks English and Elder G. Macedo
who is here in Pombal with us is super sick. He will get better soon
though. I think he just isn't adjusting to the heat very well.
Anyways, that is all for this week! Love you all!
Sister Udy
